I don't know if this applies, but I have some sample books of men's worsted wool suiting.  I'm cutting the samples out of the books (when I have time) and plan on sewing them into rows and making a scrappy brick like quilt.  This project is not planned for the immediate future...LOL

Don't know how big the quilt will be as it will depend on how many pieces I have to sew together.  I think the pieces will be 4.5 x 5".  They are mostly dark colours but some are plain and others have stripes and patterns.  I wasn't planning on washing them but maybe I should swish around in some soap & water, rinse and hang to dry.  Otherwise, I don't know what will happen when the finished quilt is washed.

Judee what a GREAT way to use those!

My recommendation
1-wool often shrinks.. but you have to use hot water AND agitation in the machine. that is the felting process.  So if you don't plan to wash the finished quilt that way... you should be fine with a soak and dry

2-you should rinse the wool as you don't know where it has been and if it has bugs. Bugs like wool .. if you live anywhere it gets warm.. bugs find wool.. so keep bay leaves and moth balls with your wool

The sample books came from a store in either Toronto or Ottawa...but before that, who knows.  Will definitely rinse before sewing.  Bay leaves?  That's a new one for me.  Will go shopping for some of those to add to the moth balls.  Thanks.

if you have moth balls you don't also need bay leaves.. that is for people who don't want the mothball smell.   Tell us what you find!

Tucson & Phoenix Thrift Stores are great places to look for wool.  All the people who move here bring them and after a while realize they will never need them here!!!

I do most of my wool by hand too.. i love the feel of the wool.   My girlfriend just finished that quilt on a black flannel.. and just got it back from being custom quilted... it's is amazing. I'll have to take a few photos!

Pat I would love to see it finished and see how they quilted it!   It is so beautiful in the picture on the pattern, but can't see it quilted etc.    I am thinking of doing it in 3 wall hangings.    I don't think I will ever in my lifetime finish all the borders.     I have 3 kids (40's)  that may enjoy them.     What do you think?

sounds great to me to do it in sections as a gift.. go for it!!! I'll get my friend to bring her quilt again when we meet and I'll take a few photos. She had it professionally long arm quilted by my friend in SD that is doing some of my magazine work.
