The Aloha Quilt, by Jennifer Chiaverini. Simon & Schuster, $24 (336p) ISBN 978-1-4165-3318-4

In this latest entry to the bestselling Elm Creek Quilts series, quilting queen Bonnie Markham explores Hawaii and learns about the islands' quilting traditions while setting up a tropical quilt camp. Weary from a difficult divorce battle, Bonnie leaves beloved Elm Creek Manor and takes up her friend's invitation to start the camp; once in Hawaii, she gets to work on hiring staff and making her version of a Hawaiian quilt. When her mean-spirited ex-husband-to-be demands half her share in Elm Creek as part of the settlement, Bonnie takes drastic measures to protect the estate and her friends. Still, the big changes are hard to take, and Bonnie's not sure she can follow through. With homey details and a strong sense of the connections that bind women, friends, and families, Chiaverini (Circle of Quilters) lovingly crafts her tale about a woman stitching together a new life and a new project. Series fans will enjoy this latest entry, and those new to the quilting bee should have no problem finding their groove. (Apr.)

Thanks for the tip!  I've now got the book on hold at my local public library.  Of course, they don't have any copies yet, but I'm in line!

Here's another book of Jennifer C's I've been meaning to read too.  Sounds like it is more of a cookbook.  Has anyone read it?

The Quilter's Kitchen by Jennifer Chiaverini

Elm Creek Quilts has a new chef, Anna, (who was introduced to us in the book Circle of Quilters)  but one of her conditions to taking the job was a total renovation of the manor's kitchen, which had not been updated since the 1940's with the exception of a very old microwave.  To prepare for the makeover Anna and Sylvia, whose family has called the manor home since the 1800's, must clean out all the drawers and cupboards.  They spend the day packing up the good and throwing out the bad, but they also uncover many treasures, from a cut glass serving dish, old family recipes, and heirlooms that just have to be kept.  These treasures bring back many memories for Sylvia of years past at Elm Creek Manor which she shares with Anna, causing her to reflect on some of her family memories. The book contains over 100 recipes, old ones found in the kitchen and new ones that have become favorites of the Elm Creek quilters.

The is the thirteenth book in the Elm Creek series and when you finish it you will have a big decision to make.  Do you put it on the bookshelf with all the other Elm Creek books or keep in the kitchen with your cookbooks?

I've now finished the book.  Was Sylvia's name Gustafson at one time?  There was a new quilter character with that name introduced.  I enjoyed the story and the wee bit of romantic interest.

I was amazed at the information about Hawaii in the book.  Never realized Hawaii had such a history.  I was a kid when Hawaii became a state.  Looks like it wasn't such a glorious celebration for everyone.

And then there was the information about Hawaiian applique and patterns.

The book sent me searching for more info.

Yes, I have read it.  I was very disappointed because it does have more recipes than plot.  I wanted to know more about my favorite characters.  Some of the happenings in the recipe book are referred to in other books.

I just bought the paperback "The Lost Quilter" at the Lancaster Show. One of the few bucks I dropped. Probably dropped more at the bar on my way out than at the vendors at the show. OOOOH! That doesn't sound so good does it? LOL I'm a cheap drunk really and had to stay sober b/c I was driving myself. LOL Haven't read the book yet. I'm on Racing in the Rain a recommendation here.

I just finished the Aloha Quilt too.  I enjoyed it with all the historical information, tourist places, and quilting descriptions, BUT I think I would have had a different ending if I had written the book.  I won't say more, so as not to spoil it for the other ladies on the forum.

I am hoping to read that this summer.  I meant to put a hold on it but forgot-got sidetracked when I saw a new release up front.  Just finished "Prayers for Sale".  It was an excellent story about an 86-year old woman who went to Colorado in a covered wagon.  She was a ...quilter!  She befriends a young girl who also quilts. The story takes place during the Depression.  It was touching and the story of quilts wrapped in it was so serendipitous.

Oooh, another Sandra Dallas book!  My public library is finally getting them.  I've placed this one on hold -- I already have too many books on my night stand stack.

Thanks for the tip.

I have to get back to the library since I'm on my last library book. I've got Prayers for Sale that I borrowed from my small lqs who takes in and lends any books/novels about quilting. I don't want to take a library book in case I loose it, but if I loose this one I'll buy her a new one. LOL I keep up with the Elm Creek books too and Earlene Fowler (library doesn't carry those - go figure).

Thanks for the tip about "Prayers for Sale".  I just reserved it at my local library.  Sounds like an interesting story.  I have liked the Sandra Dallas' books I've read in the past.

I got "Prayers for Sale" from my library last Saturday and started reading it.  Thanks for the recommendation.  I'll be taking a sabbatical from the office starting tomorrow for a year and I have an hour-long commute on the train and bus to and from the school each way.  So I can either get a lot of reading done or do my homework.  I prefer to do the fun reading!
