I'm making beef stew in my giant-o crock pot.. I followed the quantities the recipe says but the liquid does not cover all the ingredients.. should I add more liquid? I have potatoes, carrots, beef, onion, mushrooms...

My crockpot is collecting dust in the cupboard its is going to be 43C today the hottest Nov day on record so I think I may have a mutiny if I get it out lol. Pat I would add some more liquid add some now and a bit later if it look's like it needs it.

How is your stew doing, Pat? My stew recipe doesn't have much liquid in it at first, but I guess it cooks out of the veggies, because when it is done, it is perfectly saucy. Good luck with yours.

it is really looking good.. I did put in 1/2 cup more beef broth than she called for... and now I think it needs some kind of seasoning but I don't know what to add.. it had some red wine vinegar and soy in the broth... parsley.. bayleaf.. salt and pepper

On a TV show this week with all sorts of holiday hints/tips, a crock pot was used for heating towels for facials, even uses to soften mens beards. Now that' probably what I would use a crock pot for - NAH! DH makes great pulled pork in the crock pot.

On New Year Day, I made bean soup in my crock pot. It was delicious! Here is where I found the recipe: http://susanbranch.com/cooking/2010recipes/images/beansoup.jpgShe cooked it in a heavy pot but I wanted to use the crock pot. Now for a few notes: Be sure to soak the navy beans for at least 24 hours! Don't know why I have trouble with beans getting tender. I put everything in the crock at 9:30am in the morning and cooked it until we ate at 6:30pm. It was not quite done! By the time I took it out of the pot at 9:00pm and cooled it was done! After about 6 hours I took out the hamhocks and cut out the meat. I also added half a slab of ham slice. So there was at least one small piece of meat in each spoonful. Hope you all enjoy it! Happy New Year!

I have to share this book with ya'll... Williams-Sonoma The New Slow Cooker, fresh receipes for the modern cook, by Brigit Binns, U.S. $34.95/Can. $41.95 I went into Williams-Sonoma and once I saw the cover picture, I knew the book would be coming home with me. I have made three recipes from the book: Braised Chicken Pappardelle (I couldn't find the Pappardelle so I used wide egg noodles) Garlicky Pork with Greens Classic Beef Stew It also gives a side you can make with the recipes. You do have little bit of prep work (cutting veggies and browning meat) but it is well worth it at dinner time!!!! ENJOY!

Karen.... that recipie sounds similar to my non-recipie soup. I don't use hamhocks... wouldn't know one if I saw one I just dice up one of those Kentucky Legend chucks of boneless ham and I add garlic instead of bay leaf and I also add home grown green beans with the carrots, onion and celery. The family loves it! I believe Pat is correct... the beans may be too old if they aren't cooking up fast enough. But soaking them overnight should help. hm

Oh, I love my crockpots. Have one here in CLT & a big one home in Pa. Use them both all year. Last thing I made here was turkey chili for my fly friends. Was delish! Kinda late today, but think I just may put something in it for tomorrow. Thanks Karen for bringing this out of hiding.\ Dixie
